Class Description
Palette Knife Acrylic Painting (Prereq: Acrylics Beginning)
In this class students will create expressive paintings using the delightful technique of impasto (thick) application. Palette knives will be used along with paint brushes. Demonstrations and one-on-one help sessions guide students through the process, from laying on the first skin of paint, to building up form and the refinement phase. Finished paintings are often described as luscious, or gem-like when the textures are illuminated by a light source. For the best experience, please have supplies ready for the first day of class. Please be ready to carry wet paintings home. I like to reuse use old cardboard boxes.
*Some painting experience is recommended. *

Supplies
Below is a list of recommended supplies. You may click on the links to purchase some of the items from Amazon.com. The RGM painting knife brand was selected for its deep profile and flexible blade, which helps make the process of applying paint to canvas easier. Be prepared to use a large amount of paint. Please also bring a surface to mix paint on like a palette or palette paper. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on my Contact page. I look forward to seeing you in class!
We will be using paint brushes as well as palette knives throughout the class. So, please bring any brushes that you may have. If you need to purchase brushes, I recommend acquiring a few different sizes and shapes. Some sizes/shapes that are nice to have are a filbert size 4 or 6, round size 3 and 3/4 or 3/8 inch angle shader. If you need to purchase a whole set the Monte Marte set linked here on amazon is a good starter set of soft brushes. You may also find a few stiff, natural bristle brushes useful for added texture effects.
The following three palette knives from Dickblick.com or Michaels.com (online only) are what we will be using in class:
Traditional RGM Palette Knife 20
RGM Italian Plus Painting Knife, 22
RGM Italian Plus Painting Knife, 62
For paint, please purchase the milo Heavy Body Acrylic Painting set as well as the additional Cerulean Blue color from MyArtscape Brand. Those are only available on Amazon. The links are below.
You will also need a good amount of modeling paste for the class. Here is the link:
You will also need a few different sizes of canvas panels and a canvas paper pad (link below). You will need two small squares size 4 x 4 or 6 x 6, two size 9 x 12 and two size 11 x 14. I find multipacks on amazon to be the best deal. There is a link for a pack below.
Also a Strathmore Canvas Paper 10 sheet Pad 9 x 12 inch (recommended) but any canvas pad will do. It will be used for practice exercises. Here is the link:
